Recall Engine vs Anki for medical students: which to use?
How a flashcard scheduler and a medical question bank compare.
The short answer. Anki is an open-source spaced repetition app that schedules flashcards you write yourself or download from other users. Recall Engine is a prepared medical question bank for all five years of medical school plus a generator that turns your own lecture PDF or PowerPoint into SBAs, MCQs, flashcards, and high-yield notes. Pick Anki to keep a deck in rotation for years and Recall Engine to practise exam-style questions on your course. You can use both.

We make Recall Engine. Weigh this accordingly. Every fact about Anki on this page comes from Anki's manual, the AnkiMobile App Store listing, or the AnkiDroid Google Play listing. We checked each one on 28 October 2026 and link them in the sources below.
What each one is
Anki: a scheduler for cards you supply
Anki's manual puts it plainly: "There are two simple concepts behind Anki: active recall testing and spaced repetition." You show yourself a card, try to recall the answer, and rate how it went. Anki then decides when that card comes back.
The cards come from you. The manual says: "The easiest way to get started with Anki is to download a deck of cards someone else has shared". It also says: "Creating your own deck is the most effective way to learn a complex subject." Anki is not built for one field. Its manual lists "Studying for medical and law exams" among its uses and says it supports images, audio, videos, and scientific markup.
Recall Engine: a question bank plus a lecture generator
Recall Engine has two parts.
- A prepared question bank. It holds 31,840 questions, 1,512 topic notes, and 343 clinical skills guides. These counts were read on 28 Oct 2026. The bank is organised by stage and discipline. Bank questions explain every option and 100% of them have five options. Library content is reviewed under clinician oversight.
- A generator for your own lectures. Upload a PDF or PowerPoint up to 100 MB. Pick the pages and get SBAs, MCQs, flashcards, or high-yield notes. Each lecture output names the page it came from so you can check it against your slides. PowerPoint files are read as slide text alone. Export image-heavy slides to PDF first.
A daily review brings your saved flashcards back when they are due.

When to pick Anki
Anki is the stronger tool for several jobs. Here is when we would point you to it.
- You already have a deck you trust. A mature deck that you or your classmates built is worth keeping. Anki exists to keep that kind of deck in rotation for as long as you keep reviewing.
- You want control over the schedule. Anki's deck options set new cards per day, maximum reviews per day, learning steps, and desired retention under its FSRS scheduler. The manual says the default retention of 90% "offers a good balance of retention and workload". It also advises you to "spend a few weeks with the defaults" before you change anything.
- You want to customise the app. The manual says add-ons can provide "extra support for specific languages, extra control over scheduling, and so on."
- You study without a connection. The AnkiMobile listing says card media is stored on your device "so you can study without an internet connection." AnkiDroid installs on Android and syncs with AnkiWeb.
- You want a free tool for every subject. Anki on a computer and AnkiDroid cost nothing. Anki works for any subject you can put on a card.
When to pick Recall Engine
- Your exam asks SBAs and MCQs. Flashcards test what you can recall. A question bank asks you to pick one answer from close options as your exam does.
- You want questions from tonight's lecture. Upload the PDF or PowerPoint, pick the pages, and practise. You do not write cards first.
- You want explanations. Bank questions explain every option. A wrong answer then shows you why the other choices fail.
- You want to find your weak topics. On the plans that include them, Weakness Packs turn the questions you missed in your own lectures into a focused set.
- You want to check the source. Each set made from your lecture names the page it came from.
How to use both
The two can work together.
- Practise questions in Recall Engine. Use the bank for your year or make a set from your latest lecture.
- Turn misses into Anki cards. When you get a question wrong, write one card for the fact you missed in your own words. Anki's manual says writing cards yourself "forces you to decide what the key points are".
- Keep one home for flashcards. Recall Engine does not export decks to Anki. If you keep a long-term Anki deck, use Recall Engine for questions and Anki for cards to avoid reviewing the same fact twice.
